Reminder – Important changes on Vicar Lane, Great Cross Road, George Street, and West Street

On Monday 30th October 2023, work will begin on Vicar Lane, Great Cross Road, George Street, and West Street.

This work will make changes to the road network that will alter how vehicles use this area of the city centre. As part of this work there will be permanent changes to the road network on the following roads:

Vicar Lane

Vicar Lane will be stopped up at its junction with Great Cross Street, as a bus gate is being created in this location.

Vehicles will be unable to travel north along Vicar Lane past Great Cross Street and, instead, will be directed east along Great Cross Street. In early 2024, once construction has finished, only permitted vehicles, such as buses and taxis, will be able to travel north along Vicar Lane again, through the bus gate.

Great Cross Street

Great Cross Street will continue to be a one-way street, but the direction of the traffic will be reversed, flowing from Vicar Lane to George Street.

George Street

George Street will become a two-way street between Leeds Road and Great Cross Street. Currently it is only two-way between Leeds Road and West Street.

West Street

West Street will become a cul-de-sac as the road will be stopped up at its junction with Vicar Lane. Traffic will be able to travel in both directions. All parking bays (except the disabled parking bays) will be removed. This change allows for a new bus stop to be constructed outside of the Job Centre on Vicar Lane.

The disabled bays on West Street will remain accessible throughout these works as West Street will become two-way.

For more information about the works happening in this area, please visit our website. A page dedicated to the works in this area of the city centre can be found here: https://www.future-bradford.co.uk/Well-Street-and-Vicar-Lane-2/.

We also sent a letter to local businesses and residents explaining these changes which you can view here: https://www.future-bradford.co.uk/important-changes-on-vicar-lane-great-cross-road-george-street-and-west-street/

BD:is LIT 2023

On Friday 3 and Saturday 4 November, Bradford’s city centre will host BD:is LIT, a light festival with illuminating sculptures and performance art that celebrate the district’s rich cultural heritage and architecture.

To assist with the increased footfall expected during the festival, there will be some road closures in place on both days.

Friday 3 November and Saturday 4 November 2023

From 4.45pm to 6.10pm Sunbridge Road, between Godwin Street and Market Street, will be restricted to buses only.

After 6.10pm, Sunbridge Road, between Godwin Street and Market Street will be closed to all vehicles until 10pm.

While this restriction and road closure is in place, traffic will be diverted along Godwin Street, onto Prince’s Way, and then left onto Hall Ings where a normal route can be resumed.

There will be some bus service alterations, including some services running from different stops. Information about this will be displayed at bus stops.

Early notice of upcoming bus changes

From early 2024, new bus routes will come into effect and buses will no longer travel through the city centre. Instead, they will be routed around the core along dedicated bus routes to improve reliability and journey times.

More information on these route changes will be shared in the coming months within future e-newsletters and on the Future Bradford website.

For information on current bus disruptions and diversions around the district please do check the Metro website: https://www.wymetro.com/plan-a-journey/travel-news/bus-travel-alerts/.
