Progress update
Work resumes on final sections in Bradford city centre
Happy New Year, and welcome back to the Future Bradford weekly construction newsletter. We hope you had a restful break.
It has been a productive first week back on site, where our team has resumed construction in key areas of the city centre where work is still required.
Earlier this week, the fencing that had been in place around the newly installed planter units on Market Street, Bridge Street, Bank Street and Broadway were completely removed.

Work has also recommenced in the Norfolk Gardens area, which is the final major section to complete. Paving work will soon start in the area, near to the former NCP car park. We currently expect work in this area to be completed in the spring.
Finishing touches such as landscaping and planting will continue over the coming weeks, and new street furniture is continuing to be installed on the newly pedestrianised streets.
Important traffic management updates
Temporary road closure at Drake Street via Hall Ings
On Tuesday 7 January 2025, Drake Street was temporarily closed to general traffic at the junction with Hall Ings. This is to allow essential footway and cycleway completion works to be carried out.
Access to Broadway car park and the newly completed turning circle at Bank Street is still possible, but no left turn to Drake Street is possible from Hall Ings. A diversion route for HGV’s is signposted in the area.
The closure is expected to be in place until Friday 17 January 2025. However, due to the recent poor weather, this may be extended into the following week.
Drake Street access from Bridge Street is still possible. Further information has been shared below.
Temporary suspension of Bridge Street bus lane
Whilst the Drake Street road closure is in place, we have temporarily suspended the bus lane on Bridge Street, meaning that general traffic can use the road.
General traffic can make a right turn onto Drake Street to access the Great Victoria Hotel car park.
Once Drake Street is reopened at the Hall Ings junction, the Bridge Street bus lane will be reinstated.
Bradford Interchange bus station reopened
As of Sunday 5 January, Bradford Interchange bus station reopened to the public, and bus services are now operating from the upper concourse.
Due to ongoing resurfacing works, around six bus stands will stay out of action until at least April 2025. Therefore, some bus services will remain on-street until that time.
The lift between the bus station upper and lower concourse is currently out of service. Customers can still use the stairs or escalator for access. Security team staff are present if you can’t use the stairs or are having difficulty getting to where you need to go.
Bradford City of Culture 2025 – RISE
Bradford City of Culture 2025 officially kicks off this weekend with the RISE launch event at City Park.
If you are planning to attend the event, are a city centre resident, or are visiting the city centre on Friday 10 January or Saturday 11 January, please refer to the event information by visiting the Bradford 2025 website.
This week's construction, traffic, and access updates
-
The majority of traffic management measures that were put in place for the transformation works were removed in December 2024. This is due to the significant progress we have made on site, with most of the new pedestrianised streets now fully open to the public.
We would like to remind residents and visitors that traffic management measures are still in place at the following locations:
-
What: The installation of new drainage, kerbs and new carriageway, cycleway and footways on Hall Ings is largely complete. Footway and cycleway construction across the Drake Street junction is now in progress.
Traffic management: Drake Street is closed at the junction with Hall Ings.
Why: The work on Well Street has re-opened the road as a bus route, while the work on Vicar Lane has allowed for the reconnection of Vicar Lane to Hall Ings via the new ‘CYCLOPS’ junction.
