Pedestrianisation works continue as Hall Ings bus shelter is removed
The transformational pedestrianisation works in the city centre have continued to progress this week. New paving has started to take shape in various locations including Bank Street, Market Street, Broadway and Bridge Street. The bus shelters on Hall Ings have been removed this week as part of works to create a major new public space in the city centre. The steel columns and beams, glazing, timber and plastics from the shelters will either be re-used or recycled. The stone and concrete have also been removed from the site and will be recycled for use in future construction works. Benches from the canopy structure will be re-used elsewhere as part of the scheme. We have shared images below which shows new paving being installed. We have also included an image of the bus shelters being removed at Hall Ings.

NCP car park demolition progress
From next week, further pedestrianisation work will commence on Hall Ings which will see the creation of a major new public space in the city centre. The existing bus shelters on Hall Ings will start to come down to allow for the creation of this new space. As with all material that is removed as part of this project, every effort will be made to recycle it so it can be used elsewhere in other construction projects. We have shared an image of an artists impression which shows how the space will look once it is completed. You can also find out more about the Hall Ings works by clicking here. Demolition works to the former NCP car park saw the screens and scaffolding removed this week. The screens and scaffolding enabled the higher levels to be taken down; now complete, the demolition sequence will now continue from the ground floor. From next Monday, large machines will begin slowly breaking down the remaining sections of the structure with a view to complete demolition by the end of July. The works to demolish the former NCP car park will create a new green space linking to Hall Ings and Norfolk Gardens. Below, you can view an image of the NCP car park demolition progress.

Overnight works advanced notice
As mentioned in last weeks e-newsletter, a fortnight of overnight works is due to take place in the city centre. This work is expected to begin 17 June 2024 and will last for two weeks. The works will involve resurfacing and lining works. Road surfaces will be replaced at Sunbridge Road, Godwin Street and Prince's Way, and will take place between 8pm and 5am. Some local diversions will be placed around the works whilst they are being carried out. Works will be completed in sections in order to minimise disruption.
Reminder: Blue Badge parking spaces and taxi ranks
As shared in previous e-newsletters, we have put together two new maps to make it easier to know where taxi ranks and Blue Badge parking is located around the city centre during the construction works. As construction progresses and the new taxi ranks and Blue Badge parking bays open up, we will add them onto the maps so that the they have the most up to date information on where you can find taxis and Blue Badge parking provision in the city centre. After construction has finished, there will be more Blue Badge parking bays and a similar number of taxi rank spaces in the city centre than there was before construction began. Reminder: Temporary pedestrian crossings
Temporary pedestrian crossings have been opened up across the city centre in places where works are happening. We have included a map of the pedestrian crossing points in the core of the city centre below.

There is no vehicle access through Bank Street or Hall Ings past the Broadway car park, and access will be limited during the hours of 10:30 am until 4:30 pm. The map has an arrow that shows that the direction of travel should be from Hall Ings, near the Broadway Centre, through to Drake Street, making a right turn on Bridge Street, then onto Market Street to exit towards Cheapside.

Bus services: You can view the Bradford city centre bus stop map by clicking here. We are closely monitoring journey times on bus services each day and will make efforts to minimise congestion if there does appear to be a spot which is holding up buses.
Blue Badge parking spaces and taxi ranks: The majority of Blue Badge parking spaces in the city centre are being retained, however, the spaces on Bridge Street and Norfolk Gardens are now not accessible due to the construction works. The closest spaces to these roads are on Aldermanbury. New Blue Badge parking spaces are also being put in place as part of the scheme. The taxi rank which was located on Bank Street is no longer accessible. The nearest taxi ranks to this location are on Hall Ings by the junction with Well Street, outside of Bradford Interchange and on Sunbridge Road. Three temporary taxi ranks have also been installed at Sunbridge Road, off Drake Street at the front of the Great Victoria Hotel, and on Bridge Street opposite the hotel. City centre core access and new one-way route
Vehicle access on pedestrianised streets is not permitted between the hours of 10.30 am and 4.30 pm, except for emergency service and construction vehicles. Outside these hours access for authorised vehicles is via a one-way system through Bridge Street. Below, you can see how this one-way system works.

See below for a detailed summary of the latest updates about the works taking place around the city centre. What: On Sunbridge Road, works are almost complete.
Traffic management: The eastbound lane on Sunbridge Road, between Barry Street and Godwin Street, is now permanently removed. Vehicles travelling eastbound are being diverted along Barry Street. The new permanent traffic signals are now in operation at the Barry Street junction.
Why: This work will provide wider footpaths and introduce cycle lanes. Two new bus shelters will also be put in place for bus routes travelling out of the city centre.

What: Works are continuing to the new central reservation on Godwin Street between Sunbridge Road and Thornton Road and between Thornton Road and Jacobs Well.
Traffic management: Westgate will continue to be reduced to one lane travelling eastbound to the junction with Godwin Street. Godwin Steet will continue to be reduced to one lane southbound in both directions between Sunbridge Road and Thornton Road. The northbound lane closure between Thornton Road and Sunbridge Road has now been removed. Little Horton Lane is now closed to all traffic at its junction with Godwin Street. Traffic travelling southbound on Godwin Street is not permitted to use the new pedestrian supercrossing to make a U-turn.
Why: This change will provide more space for bus stops and routes into the city and an additional bus lane on Godwin Street.

What: At Jacobs Well, works are continuing within and around the former roundabout.
Traffic management: There will continue to be lane closures and traffic management around Jacobs Well. Since Sunday 14 April 2024, Hall Ings has been closed to all traffic from the roundabout. Northbound traffic is being guided from Manchester Road onto Prince’s Way. Southbound traffic is being guided from Prince’s Way across the new section of carriageway onto Manchester Road. Traffic in each direction is required to give way to buses joining from Hall Ings.
Why: This work will see Jacobs Well roundabout become a super crossing.

What: Work is mostly complete on Croft Street and Senior Way and the new lanes are open to traffic. Next week, works to install the new cycleway and central reserve will continue on Manchester Road.
Traffic management: Lane closures will continue on Manchester Road.
Why: The works here are to create an additional lane on the gyratory section of Croft Street in each direction and a new cycleway on Manchester Road.

What: We are nearing completion of works on both sides of Lower Kirkgate, to construct a new cycleway and footway. Work is also ongoing to form the new junction arrangement on Kirkgate.
Traffic management: The taxi rank on Lower Kirkgate is no longer in use and has been permanently removed to make way for a new cycleway. Traffic management has been installed with two-way traffic lights on the section of Lower Kirkgate between the Midland Hotel and the junction with Cheapside, Market Street, and Kirkgate. Market Street is now closed to traffic at its junction with Kirkgate/Lower Kirkgate/Cheapside. Kirkgate remains temporarily closed at its junction with Lower Kirkgate/Cheapside/Market Street to allow junction modifications to be constructed and a diversion route is in place until this work completes. There is a temporary signal-controlled pedestrian crossing point in place at the junction of Kirkgate/Lower Kirkgate/Cheapside/Market Street. This is in place to ensure that pedestrians have a safe place to cross the road. Safe pedestrian routes away from the main road and works happening in this area are also in place. Signs are in place to help direct pedestrians along this route and avoid traffic on the main road.
Why: The works here are to widen the junction to Canal Road, to allow for improved cycle lane provision, and build a new bus shelter. This work will also create a new crossing link into the city centre at Cheapside.

What: Work to construct the new road junction on Church Bank is nearing completion.
Traffic management: There are three-way temporary traffic lights on Church Bank while this work is ongoing.
Why: This work will allow for the new road links in the area.

What: The installation of new drainage, kerbs and new carriageway, cycleway and footways will continue on Hall Ings and Leeds Road.
Traffic management: Well Street and the section of Vicar Lane between Great Cross Street and Hall Ings is only open to buses and authorised traffic and the new Cyclops junction at Well Street/Vicar Lane/Hall Ings/Leeds Road is now operational. Hall Ings will continue to be reduced to one lane of traffic westbound between the junction with George Street and the junction with Drake Street. The pedestrian route on the south side of Hall Ings will be re-routed next week to allow work on the new footway to continue between the junctions with Vicar Lane and Drake Street. Hall Ings, between Bridge Street and Jacobs Well, is now closed to general traffic. This change is permanent. Click here for more information.
Why: The work on Well Street will re-open to the road as a bus route on Vicar Lane and Hall Ings, allowing for the reconnection of Vicar Lane to Hall Ings, with a new ‘CYCLOPS’ junction being introduced. Reminder: Works started on West Bradford Cycle Superhighway Extension
Work to expand the existing Bradford Leeds Cycle Superhighway to connect to West Bradford has now started. This work will create a new, largely segregated, cycle route along Sunbridge Road and Thornton Road to improve links from Bradford city centre to key areas of West Bradford, eventually ending in Thornton village. Our construction partners, Balfour Beatty, have now started construction on the scheme. This will happen at:
A6177 Ingleby Road and Thornton Road junction (by Morrisons)
City Road and Thornton Road junction
Thornton Road between Weetwood Road and Hollings Road
Sunbridge Road and City Road
At several points along the scheme on road parking has now been suspended, it is important that you do not park in any areas where parking is now prohibited.Further details about the scheme and upcoming works are available on the Future Bradford website, updates of the works will also be shared in future e-newsletters.
Reminder: temporary closure of the Bradford Interchange bus station
