Why this is being introduced
Each year, Bradford Council receives a high number of complaints about drivers ignoring signed traffic restrictions. These restrictions are in place to keep people safe and ensure traffic flows smoothly.
When drivers fail to comply, it can cause congestion and delays and, in some cases, put people at serious risk. In the most extreme situations, this behaviour can lead to serious injury or death.
The government has granted Bradford Council powers to enforce these restrictions using traffic cameras. By installing cameras at locations with a known history of violations, the council can reduce non-compliance, improve traffic flow, and enhance safety for all road users.
Moving traffic offences covered
These enforcement powers apply to specific, well-established traffic rules. Drivers may receive a fine for offences such as:
Entering a yellow box junction when the exit is not clear – this can block other vehicles and cause congestion or collisions.
Ignoring prohibited turn or entry signs – this can disrupt traffic flow and increase the risk of accidents.
Driving the wrong way on a one-way street – this creates a serious risk of head-on collisions.
Ignoring HGV weight restrictions – this can block roads, damage infrastructure, and put pedestrians and cyclists at risk.
Driving into restricted streets – this can block access for emergency services, public transport, and authorised vehicles.
Overtaking where double white lines are in place – this is dangerous and greatly increases the risk of serious collisions.
